Daily Online Searches

When we do our online searches, it requires power. In many places, the power used by search engine data centres results in CO2 emissions. these emissions contribute to climate change and harm to our already fragile environment.

What is Ecosia?

Ecosia is a search engine that plants Trees in exchange for your searches. Your Searches Translate into Trees Planted. They also use solar and other renewable energy to power their operations and produce almost twice as much power as they need, sending the surplus back into the grid. So, while you search, they plant trees, making you & Ecosia carbon negative.

How does it work?

Search engines make money when you search by serving up ads on the pages. Most search engines also track your online searches and activity and use that information to make more money.

The Trees Planted 

The planted trees remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Trees in some regions also bear fruit and nuts, creating income for the farmers & their families that care for them. It's a win win situation. When we use Ecosia for our online searches, they plant trees and more, farmers can support their families, Their children can get an education, and our planet gets a breath of fresh air. Ecosia makes use of a third party major engine on their backend that may not be carbon neutral but their surplus production of carbon negative energy for their own operations more than offsets that and the amount of CO2 Ecosia indicates is removed per search would have that factored in.

🌳 Tips / Other Small Things can make a Big Difference

  • Here are some additional tips on small things we can all do to help reduce our personal impact on our precious environment.
  • Online Searches: When doing your daily searches online, by changing your search engine over to Ecosia you reduce CO2 by up to 1 kg per search.
  • Lighting: Replace Incandescent & halogen light bulbs with LED versions. Can reduce power for lighting up to 87%. Saves you money too.
  • In the shower. By cutting shower time by 2-5 minutes shorter, reduce energy used to heat water, reducing climate impact.
  • Heating. By reducing your thermostat by 1-3 degrees you can reduce power use by 3-9%.
  • Cooling. By increasing your thermostat by 1-3 degrees you can reduce power use by 3-9%.
  • Car: Short trips? By walking, taking a bike or using public transit, you make reduce large amounts of CO2 each year.
  • Filters. Heating & Cooling Systems. Clean filters reduce energy use.
  • Clothes Dryer: Keeping the lint filter clean reduces machine running time which results in less energy used. Saves you money too.
  • Chemical products: Household products you purchase, from detergents to shampoos and other items all use water. Every litre of water used for a chemical product is a litre of water that is removed from our environment and destroyed as being water. How much water is removed daily? Billions of litres or more?. We need to be balanced. We all need to use something for cleaning & other purposes. Try to find True Eco friendly products and reduce the amounts you use on a daily basis, keeping in mind, every litre of these products you are using has also removed a litre of precious water from our environment. Even worse, when you use chemical based products, many also damage even more water as they return to the environment. Try to use products that are derived from natural ingredients such as plant based materials. Thank you for doing your part in reducing our impact on our precious Environment.
